Description
Deceptively simple, the improved pattern dividers remain one of the designs I am most proud of, and attached to. Inspired by traditional blacksmith-forged dividers from the 18th and 19th century, but designed for modern production tools and techniques, the improved pattern dividers are a pleasure to handle and use.
The tools’ function relies on a precision-fit leaf-and-slot pivot joint. Ongoing refinements over the past five years have resulted in a pivot which can be easily adjusted using the included #10 spanner-drive bit to adjust the tension between legs. Careful hand-lapping of the 1/4″ bore to match the pivot sleeve ensures consistent tension throughout the adjustment range, and a pair of recessed teflon washers provide a smooth and satisfying action, even at the very tight settings preferred by most long-time users.
This set is made of 1144 ‘stressproof’ steel, the tips of each leg ship are easily adjusted to suit a wide range of materials using a fine file, stones, or abrasives.
Finally, the addition of very fine teflon washers between leaves has made the already smooth movement even smoother, and ensures consistent tension throughout the range of movement The relevant specs are as follows: 6″ long, milled from 12L14 steel and finished by hand (on a powered abrasive grinder), the improved pattern dividers are made with a leaf-and-sandwich pivot joint secured by a custom center sex-bolt. As a result they feel great in the hand, and have a consistent level of friction throughout the operating range. The friction can be fine tuned by adjusting the pivot bolt tension with an included # 10 spanner bit. They ship with slightly blunted tips, and are meant to be sharpened by file to suit your preference and work style.
The Improved pattern dividers are available at a price of $180.
