The Daed toolworks index planes are based largely in the British thumb plane tradition of Spiers and Norris. I designed these to be comfortable in a one- or two-hand grip (at least for the DT-0 and DT-1). Because the planes are designed for easy guidance with the index finger, UK woodworker Greg Reid suggested the term ‘index plane,’ and I took about 19 milliseconds to adopt it as the family name for these tools.
The plane wedge is designed as a handhold, nestled in the palm with the natural line of force directed exactly along the blade for comfort and feedback from the cut. I’m biased, but my opinion is that these planes have the best ergonomics I’ve ever experienced.
